Deacons are servants of the church. Deacons are to carry out the will of the church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. To the Deacons are committed all matters pertaining to the general welfare of the church-its peace and harmony, its fellowship and good order, its pastoral and lay leadership, its property and finances, its worship and ordinances, its benevolences and ministries. Next to the pastor, the deacons are charged by the church with gravest responsibility for its spiritual and material welfare.
The Deacon’s greatest service to the church will usually be found in their assistance to the pastor. To them the pastor will bring the problems, the needs, the visions and plans, the purposes, the opportunities, the difficulties, the embarrassing situations, the material and spiritual concerns of the church. In closest confidence with combined wisdom, in much prayer for guidance, pastor and deacons will seek to conserve the interests of the church and the kingdom and to project the work and influence of congregation and denomination while carrying out the “Great Commission.” Matthew 28:19-20.
